Motorola (Formerly known as Galvin Manufacturing Corporation) was founded in 1928 by Paul V Galvin and Joseph E. Galvin. Its headquarter is in Schaumburg, Illinois. It was a very old but famous American company. Now a day, it is considered as the pioneer of mobile phones and a praised manufacturer of Android phones.

The company started its journey with the concept of battery elimination from radio. It gave the opportunity to its customers to use household electricity instead of battery power to operate radios.

In 1930, Galvin manufacturing corporation made and sold the automobile radio in a low cost. These car radios are called Motorola. These car radios were mainly used in police cars. In 1937, they invented car radio with push button dialing facility. In 1940 the company introduced two-way communication devices that were mainly used by the police and the military. The improved version of this device was an AM – band Handie–Talkie used in World War ii. Handie-Talkie was a great contributor to World War and the reason for many victories and successful events.

Afterward, Handie-Talkie’s improved version FM-band walkie-Talkie came in 1943. It had a major role in the battlefield. The company changed its name to Motorola, Inc. in 1947. The name came from ‘Motor’, which means vehicle and ‘Ola’ from Victrola which means sound. Motorola entered the US consumer market with the first television set, “Golden View” which sold under $200. To boost general people’s interest in TV, Motorola started new program, “Motorola TV Hour” and Paul Galvin’s son Robert Galvin hosted the weekly drama series. In this way TV started its historical journey to a new era. And for this, Motorola was a true and vital partner.

The most historical event of mankind, “The Conquer of Moon”, also partnered by Motorola. The first man, Neil Armstrong put stepped on the moon and said, “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”. Motorola’s radio transponder was used to send Neil’s words to planet earth.

The world’s first cellular phone was developed by Motorola. In 1996, Motorola introduced the lightest phone in the market, the Motorola Star TAC. Three years later Motorola successfully introduced its iDENi1000 plus, which had web browsing and email capabilities.

In 1974 Motorola released its first microprocessor for Apple Macintosh and also for workstation computers by Sun Microsystems. From 1999 to 2007, the company met its hardest times.

In 2011, Motorola divided into two independent companies. Motorola Mobility and Motorola Solutions. Google bought Motorola Mobility in 2012 for $12.5 billion and resold it to Chinese computer company Lenovo for $2.91 billion in 2014 but kept many of the company’s patents.

Every company has ups and downs. Motorola, Inc. is not an exception. This company survived for more than 80 years (1928-2012) and contributed to almost all major events in the history of the USA. We may consider this company a legend of America.
